Will you get better drops when you are farming in Hard mode rather than Normal, many people have asked me this and i just can't answer them....
what do you think?

I believe (but please correct me if I'm wrong) that the chances of getting more valuable 'normal' items are higher in HM. With 'normal' items I mean the normal weapons/shields/bows/etc... that drop in the UW. The chance of getting a purple or gold version of those items is higher in HM. In HM you also have a chance of getting a lockpick dropped which is a pretty decent drop imo. But as for the other drops( read Globs of Ectoplasm) I don't think the drop rate is any higher in HM. But this is a discussion that goes on since the moment HM was introduced...

that was the thing i was most concerned with, all i do is farm ectos now. thanks for all the help

I'm under the impression that rare crafting materials drop in HM better than in NM. (leather vs tanned hides, linen vs cloth). But I don't know if that also applies for ecto vs glitter.

well i am talking to a couple of people and they said it might be that instead of dust you will get ecto and some say a rare drop is just a rare drop you wont get more if your in HM than NM....

The ecto drop rate is no different in NM than HM. If farming ectos is your goal, stick with NM. However, if your goal is unids, lockpicks, etc, go with HM.

When I farm for Nicholas' items, I get the common drops I am after much quicker farming in NM. Globs of Ectoplasm are a common drop.

Ectos drop same in both. If you can do both with equal ease do HM for better other drops, picks, golds, whites, blues etc all worth more. But the ectos will drop in same rate.

Wouldn't hardmode mean that you could get a tome instead of an ecto?

The short answer is - yes. But, as has been said, it depends upon what you are looking for.
There are drops, such as lockpicks and tomes, that you can only get in hard mode, and generally speaking the gold weapon and armor drops you get are better in HM. But, if you are farming for ectos, it's probably best to do that in NM.
One thing I'm not sure of is if the added drops (lockpicks, tomes, etc.) reduce the chances of getting a ecto in HM, but I don't think so.
